Tessa’s Bakery Retail Design by Urban Spaces

The Tessa’s Bakery retail design project was a deliciously rewarding collaboration between our team and one of Cape Town’s most beloved bakeries. For more than 25 years, Tessa’s has been known for handcrafted cakes and joyful celebrations. Their shift from a quiet industrial space to a vibrant, accessible retail environment required a thoughtful approach—and a full turn-key design and fitout.

From the start, we aimed to reflect the heart of the brand. The interior features a clean, crisp palette that allows the bakery’s colourful creations to stand out. To enhance the identity without overwhelming the senses, we used bold trims and playful accents sparingly. Natural light and subtle textures invite customers to stay and savour the moment.

Beyond aesthetics, functionality was a key driver. We installed an entirely new kitchen with improved flow, dedicated prep and decorating areas, and walk-in cold rooms. These upgrades enable the team to produce and store at a larger scale, improving both speed and consistency.

To further elevate the customer experience, we incorporated a dedicated barista counter, window seating, and flexible space for events such as kids’ parties and cake-decorating classes. In addition, we designed custom-built display cabinets that serve a dual purpose. These functional units showcase retail items like party add-ons, candles, toppers, and giftable treats while organizing stock in a neat, accessible format.

In short, the new bakery isn’t just a place to buy cake—it’s a space to celebrate. Through careful planning and creative design, Urban Spaces helped bring Tessa’s sweet vision to life.
