Office Design and Renovation for Atlantis Foundries: Creating a Modern Workspace for Innovation

Atlantis Foundries, located 50 km outside Cape Town, is Africa’s largest manufacturing plant of its kind. Founded in 1980 as Ferroform Foundry, the company has grown significantly and now employs over 800 staff across a vast 940,000 square meter site. The company melts 478 tonnes of iron daily and is a key player in South Africa’s industrial and economic development. In 2020, Daimler Truck, one of the world’s largest truck manufacturers, acquired full ownership of Atlantis Foundries, formerly known as Atlantis Diesel Engines (ADE).

With a strong focus on innovation and technology, Atlantis Foundries tasked Urban Spaces with renovating their main administrative building. The goal was clear: create a modern, functional workspace that aligns with the company’s commitment to efficiency, employee well-being, and cutting-edge technology.

Redesigning the Office: A Modern and Functional Approach

Our office design and renovation project for Atlantis Foundries involved a complete overhaul of their administrative space. We took on a wide range of responsibilities, from transforming the exterior and façade to the full renovation of the interior spaces. The 1600 m² building was gutted and redesigned to meet the needs of a modern workforce.

The new layout includes over 100 employees working in a mix of open-plan workstations, private meeting rooms, and breakout areas. Our office design also integrates state-of-the-art technology, including telephony and data systems, to enable smooth workflows. In addition, we added 8 kitchen areas, lounges, and pause zones to encourage creativity and collaboration.

Customized Furniture and Durable Finishes for Maximum Productivity

To ensure that the new office design and renovation is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, we customized the furniture to meet the specific needs of each department. The industrial finishes were chosen for their durability, allowing the space to withstand high traffic while maintaining a clean, modern aesthetic.

We also upgraded the windows with double-glazed, low-e glass to enhance energy efficiency. This improves insulation, keeping the building cool while reducing energy consumption.
